When a machine could only envision and retrace by referencing a few remaining rocks on a painting manual, what kind of landscape would be generated? The art of ink landscape painting is the result of artists’ observations of the natural world, with abstractly reassembled pictures created based on the integration of nature and mental images. Imagine a future where mankind has gone extinct, the Anthropocene and bygone natural landscapes have become traces and clues in the form of ruins. A machine remains and attempts to pass on fragments of human civilization by reassembling the limited information available.

A robotic arm inherits the human civilization in post-apocalyptic time. It replicates and creates art, using its mechanical ways to preserve and extend the preexisting formats of painting developed by mankind. The approach encompasses the extension of human will and also the possibilities and limitations with the machine serving as a tool (showing where the capacity range of machine painter and human painter overlaps and deviates). The robotic arm paints incessantly under a light, with completed paintings scattered at the side, resembling how analog videos were stacked and played back in human civilization.

當機器只能從畫譜中僅存的數顆石頭去想像、回溯,可能得到什麼樣的山水風景? 水墨山水本是創作者對自然界的觀察,經抽象重組為自然與心象共構的畫面。想像在人類消聲匿跡的末世,人類世與過往的自然景象僅存遺跡式殘破的線索,剩下機器透過有限的訊息重組、延續人類文明的斷片。

機器手臂作為末世的人類文明傳承者,伏案臨摹/創作,機器以其自身的方法延續、擴展人類既有的繪畫格式,而此方法既包含人類意志的延伸、也包含了機器本身作為工具的可能性及限制(機器畫家與人類畫家能力範圍的交集與差集)。手臂在燈下來回書繪,繪製完成的畫紙散落堆積於旁,如同文明類比影帶的持續堆疊回放。
